Local sales taxes continue growth

Spending in Wimberley continues to thrive as reports from sales tax allocations show a growing trend over recent months.

The sales tax check in November, which represents one percent of sales made within the city limits in September, was up more than 10 percent. This marks the sixth straight month of growth compared to the same month last year.

The November check was for $93,466.97, which is up 10.17 percent over the $84,831.28 that was brought in during the same month last year. For the calendar year, Wimberley has received $878,576.87, which represents a nearly five percent increase compared to last year. This has added an additional $40,000 to the city coffers in 2019.

The story is similar, though on a much smaller scale, for the city of Woodcreek, which received $5,830.92 in November. That is up 16.63 percent compared to the same month last year. For the year, Woodcreek has received $55,726.26 from sales taxes, up 14.65 percent.

The Wimberley Village Library, which receives half a percent of sales tax spent within the Wimberley Independent School District, received $64,659.61. That is up 17.68 percent compared to the same month last year.

Hays County, which receives half a percent of sales tax allocations, received a check for $2,142,242.87 in November. That is up 21.22 percent over the same month last year. For the calendar year, Hays County has received $21,381,761.65 from sales tax, which is 10.47 percent up over the first 11 months of last year.

The month of December is always strong in Wimberley presumably because of holiday shoppers. Historically, sales in the month of December have outpaced every other month of the year for five of the last six years. The only exception was 2015 when sales within the city limits jumped immediately following the Memorial Weekend Flood.
