Knights donate $10k from Casino Night

The Knights of Columbus 4th Degree visited the Warrior and Family Support Center at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio on April 3, 2019. This support center is the only one of its kind in the country and is dedicated to providing a safe environment for wounded warriors and their family members to maintain contact with other military members or extended family members, to receive emotional support and answers to their questions, and to extend their rehabilitation away from the hospital. The 10-acre facility center is supported by donations. The Army pays three salaries. All other activities are completed by volunteers. The center’s activities vary from providing breakfast and lunch for military families during the recovery period to internet access and computer training, video games, movies, volley ball, golf lessons, and art lessons. They reach out to those who are visiting a family member in the hospital or recovering in the barracks and arrange for the visitor’s lodging. In many cases it is in a complimentary lodging facility on the base. In years past, they have reached out to as many as 800 injured soldiers and related family members. Currently they support 180 soldiers and families during the year.

This was the 9Th year that the Knights of Columbus have donated funds to this center. It is through the support of the Wimberley Valley citizens who attended this year’s Mardi Gras Casino Night at St. Mary Catholic Church Parish Activity Center that the Knights were able to donate $10,329.00 to the Warrior and Family Support Center, as well as, $900.00 to St. Vincent De Paul Society.

The next Mardi Gras Casino Night is scheduled for February 2020.
