Hear what kids think on KWVH

Having a local radio station, KWVH gives a voice to a lot unique individuals. The station’s shows cover a wide spectrum of unique individuals getting their five minutes of fame (shameless plug - listen at 7:40 a.m. or so on Wednesday to Breakfast Taco for mine).

But having covered most of the deejays, I now have two new favorite hosts, Texas Benner, 11, and Sammi Carruthers, 10, who host their show, Kids View. The once a week show is on Sundays at 2 p.m. although it is taped on Thursday, after school.

It all started after Texas and Sammi were guests separately one of Coach Smith’s shows. Texas got the radio bug and wanted to have her own show. She then wrote a proposal.

In the proposal she states she wants to, “…talk about local current events… interview kids from 4H, volleyball... baseball and foot ball… I would have a kid’s joke of the day maybe and an inspirational quote of the day. I would talk about stuff from a kid’s point of view…I worked at Mag’s Burgers.

I’m in fifth grade and eleven years old.”

The whole letter was one of a very mature eleven year old. Producer Coach Smith agreed it would be a great idea but too much responsibility for just one girl. Sammi was recruited, and Kids View was on the air

“I really didn’t know you. It’s really cool knowing you, Sammi,” Texas said of the pairing of both of them. Being Wimberley girls, they both love volleyball “and really all sports,” said Sammi. Sammi has a karaoke machine and Texas has her own microphone and plays drums for heavy metal, according to her father

“I love country and hip hop,” Sammi said. While Texas likes classic rock, AC/DC, Ozzie Osborne, old Michael Jackson and old pop tunes.”

With a wide taste, the girls submit four songs each week. We send in four songs from me and then next week for Texas,” Sammi said. As for interviews, they interview softball, baseball, FFA, EmilyAnn and other kids of interest. They have interviewed about 13 or 14 kids, all girls except for two boys.

“Guests have frozen up a few times, (The worst is) with boys. We can act up with just two girls in the room,” Sammi said. “And boys answer questions with ‘yes’ or ‘no,’ girls like to talk about themselves,” Texas chimed in. “They (boys) act super awkward at times,” Sammi reiterated.

The show started in October and has run weekly with the two girls as hosts the entire time, with each one only being out one show because of sickness.
