    DR. RICARDO VILLARREAL

Healthcare advocate looking to unseat Chip Roy in TX-21

United States Army veteran and healthcare administrator Dr. Ricardo Villarreal publicly announced his candidacy for Texas’ 21st Congressional District in the Democratic Primary.

Villarreal was born and raised in Laredo, the son of a Texan farmer and Mexican immigrant, and has since called San Antonio home for over 17 years. He advocates a more Democratic platform based around access to healthcare and insurance; reproductive health; diversity, equity and inclusion; immigration and border security; reasonable gun control and renewable energy.

As a former doctor, Villareal said he wants to force accountability for obstructions to vaccination and masking efforts. He said he believes these demonstrated a blatant disregard for constituents’ health.

“It is time to end cronyism, theatric grandstanding and divisive rhetoric,” Villarreal said. “Chip Roy’s Freedom Caucus radical right-wing agenda and antics does not serve or reflect the values of his constituents.”

“I have worked in San Antonio and the Hill Country,” he continued. “I commuted through Highway 281 to get to Fort Hood when I was mobilized with the Army. I know the people in TX-21, and they do not support the polarizing views Roy has.”

If his campaign is successful, Villarreal said he plans to work across the political aisle.

“I have worked with people from different disciplines, backgrounds, and values to improve health care,” he said. “If elected, I will represent everyone in the district and put country over party. We all do better when we all work together.”
