Filing period open for the Woodcreek city council election

City requests grant for park improvements

The filing period for the Woodcreek City Council election is now open. There will be three positions on the ballot for the November 2 General Election.

The position of Mayor, currently held by Gloria Whitehead, as well as two places on the city council, currently held by Brent Pulley and Bob Hambrick, will be up for election. The filing period opened July 17 and closes August 16. The last day to register to vote is October 4.

Park Request Made

The Woodcreek City Council unanimously passed a request from the Parks and Recreation Board to apply for grant funds from the Hays County Parks Bond to bolster three public areas within the city.

The Triangle, at the intersection of Woodcreek Drive and Brookhollow Drive, is due for an upgrade if the funds are approved.

“We are trying to make the Triangle the focal point of the city, and plan to have various activities there,” City Manager Brenton Lewis said.

The initial plan, which would still have to go before city council for a vote if the funding is approved, would add a gazebo, water fountain, benches and a bike rack to the area.

Augusta Lane Park, which was the city’s first park, would add multiple games like ping-pong and cornhole while also making the area more ADA accessible. The city also deemed an area along Brookhollow next to the low water crossing as parkland. The request for funds would include a “large, low-maintenance play structure,” swings, bike racks, paths, benches and a fence.

The total request would be for $270,000 with the city of Woodcreek potentially pitching in around $62,000, which would amount to the city paying 25% of the total funds allocated.

“To give us the opportunity to do some park development at maybe 25 percent is one heck of an opportunity that I don’t think we should pass up,” Councilmember Bob Hambrick said.

Councilmember Brent Pulley clarified that the specific requests made may not be exactly what the final product looks like but that the request “ is the type of new additions, and buildings (the Parks board) would like to see installed.”

City staff will now work with the Parks and Recreation Board to finish the application to request the funds from the Hays County Parks and Open Space Advisory Commission.
