Day One of New Diet

Is It Just Me?

Join Wimberley humorist Susan Rigby as she attempts to navigate “the small stuff.”

I got out of bed, totally motivated that this is a good day to start my diet. I am not even hungry but they say you should never skip breakfast. My breakfast choices are, a grapefruit that is starting to mold; yogurt with a 2022 expiration date, or a movie sized box of Whoppers. The Whoppers are made with something that sounds healthy - malted milk. I finish my coffee with light soy milk and the Whoppers, and start my healthy grocery list. The list includes salad fixings, fruit, chicken, fish veggies and yogurt - I am very motivated.

Heading into the grocery store, I have to squeeze my way past a cute little Girl Scout holding cookies near my nose. I smile, but resist with pride. I fill my cart with all of the healthy foods on my list and pat myself on my back, in my head, and get in line to pay. The person in the front of the line was slowly looking for his checkbook. To keep myself occupied, I check out the magazines and glance at the candy and one-portion sized cookie bags. Again, no temptation.

The lady in front of me unloads her cart that is filled with candy, cookies and a birthday cake. She mentions that she is having a party. Right! I’ve used that excuse before as I look proudly at the healthy food in my cart. I made it through check out with no chocolate or sweets!

To say that I am proud of myself is a major understatement.

As I am putting my change into my purse while walking out of the grocery store, I accidentally knock down the Girl Scout holding a box of Thin Mints. I feel awful as I see her try to hide the tears as I help her up. I tell her how sorry I am and purchase 2 boxes of Thin Mints. I really had no choice.

I load my groceries into the back seat and the Thin Mints into the front. My diet was meant to start tomorrow.
