Curb your churro craving at Wimberley Market Day

Saturday, September 4, is the date of the next Wimberley Market Day. Besides the WMD staples such as tasty barbeque and great music, the Wimberley Lions Club has recently introduced a sweet treat to enhance the marketplace experience, the churro. Anyone who has visited a Disney amusement park or is a fan of “The Big Bang Theory” will know exactly what a churro is. For those who do not qualify in either category, this fairground food is a fried pastry covered in sugar and cinnamon. Why the churro?

Lion John Odell said, “It all started during our June Market Day. Tim Kiesling is the General Manager of KWVH, Wimberley Valley Radio, and that Saturday was his first day to broadcast live from Lions Field. So, we were chatting and he asked me where he could buy a churro. I said we don’t sell churros. He was dumbfounded and said ‘What? Are you kidding me? Do you know what the number-one selling food item at Disney World is?’ I said ‘I have no idea.’ He said ‘churros’. And then, he told me he was going to start a campaign to encourage the Lions to sell churros at Market Day.”

Odell continued, “Later that morning, while we were standing together chatting again, a couple came up to his table where he was broadcasting and said they were regular listeners and big fans of the station. He introduced me to them and then let them know that we don’t sell churros. The gentleman then looked up and said, ‘Well, last time I had a churro was at Disney World.’ Tim then said, ‘See, I told you...’”

Co-hosts of the KWVH morning show on Mondays from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m., Kiesling and Odell are the founders of “Team Churro.” The latter said, “The following Monday morning is when the campaign began, during our morning show. And for the next month, every Monday he would ask if we were going to sell churros. The Monday before the July Market Day, I brought in a surprise guest, Lion President Cade Wright, to announce that beginning in July, churros would be sold at Market Day.”

The next step involved broadcasting to the community about the new offering, as Odell explained, “Churros have been mentioned on the air by most of the daily morning show crew, as well as several other live shows in the studio throughout the week.” So far, the pastry product has been a good fit for the Lions’ outdoor market and is sold at Concession 1 and Concession 2.

Elsewhere at Lions Field, beginning around 11:00 a.m., Patrick Greene headlines at the Pavilion Stage. Lance Lipinsky returns to the Shady Grove stage. And, Tracy Weinberg plays at the Hill Top stage.

Wimberley Market Day is held on the First Saturday of each month, rain or shine. September’s shopping hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Lions Field is located off FM 2325, about a mile from the Wimberley Square. The $5.00 donation accepted at the Lions Club’s parking lots helps to fund the various grants and scholarships distributed by the Wimberley Lions Club.
