COVID-19 climb continues

Hays County has seen an almost 100 percent increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases in the last week. As of Monday, June 22, there were 1,871 total confirmed cases in the county. This follows a week where there was a 112.7 percent increase in COVID-19 cases in the county making it back-to-back weeks that the total cases have essentially doubled.

The Wimberley Valley has now increased to 22 total cases of COVID-19 with 11 of those being active. There are no reported cases within the city limits of Woodcreek.

There are 1,477 active cases in the county since the recent spike with 389 recovered. The large majority of cases are in San Marcos, which has 1,027 active cases as of Monday. The 20 to 29 year old demographic makes up 53.7 percent of the total cases.

The number of negative tests is 5,865. Hays County has had 53 total hospitalizations; 14 people are currently hospitalized. There have been five COVID-19 related fatalities in the county.

“We can slow the spread of the virus,” Hays County Epidemiologist Eric Schneider said, “but it will take the whole Hays County community.”

He reminded everyone that staying distanced in public, washing hands and wearing masks are simple but effective methods of helping to prevent transmission of COVID-19.
