COVID-19 cases rise quickly in Wimberley

The Wimberley Valley is starting to see a spike in COVID-19 cases with an additional 14 reported in the last week. There are now has 36 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 25 of those being active in Wimberley. That is a 63.6 percent increase in total cases in the valley in the last seven days.

Hays County does not report how many people are hospitalized within each jurisdiction, but 10 of the people with COVID-19 in Wimberley have recovered. One has died. There are no lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 for individuals who live within the city of Woodcreek.

The sixth COVID-19-related death in Hays County occurred over the weekend. Hays County officials said that the person who died was a woman in her 70s from San Marcos.

Hays County now has 2,661 lab confirmed cases of COVID-19. With six total fatalities and 422 individuals considered recovered, Hays County has 2,233 active COVID-19 cases as of June 29. Those active case numbers are similar to many countries, including Greece (1,825 active cases), Costa Rica (1,860) and El Salvador (2,361). As of June 29, Hays County’s active COVID-19 cases would rank as the 69th highest total in the world were it compared to countries.

The number of active cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Hays County has dramatically risen over the last few weeks; however, the total number of hospitalizations and deaths related to the disease have not risen as quickly.

The sixth death related to COVID-19 in Hays County occurred over the weekend, which was the first death since June 1. As of June 29, there were 19 Hays County residents currently hospitalized with COVID-19. There have been 62 Hays County residents hospitalized since the pandemic began.

The overwhelming majority of lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases in Hays County are people who live in San Marcos. San Marcos has 1,544 total cases with 1,425 currently active. Kyle has 713 total cases with 501 considered active. Buda has 272 cases with 211 considered active. Dripping Springs has very similar numbers to Wimberley with 34 total cases, 25 of which are active.

The statistics also have begun skewing much younger than the beginning of the pandemic. Now, the highest demographic for Hays County residents with COVID-19 are 20 to 29 year olds, which make up 50.65 percent of the total cases within the county.
