COVID-19 cases hit record highs in county

Hays County has seen a steep increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases over the last week.

With 69 more cases reported on Monday, the total cases within the county has more than doubled in the last week.

The new single day record for COVID-19 confirmed cases is 142, which was reported on Saturday.

There are now 16 total cases in the Wimberley Valley, none of which are within the city limits of Woodcreek. Of those, eight have recovered.

“With the high numbers of positive cases over the past week or so,” Schneider said, “I want to remind Hays County residents that we are still in a global pandemic.”

Schneider said if people want to stop the spread of the virus, they should continue doing the things they were doing in the spring, including wearing masks, staying physically distanced from others and washing their hands often.

“We need everyone to continue working together and protecting our community,” he said.

In Hays County, there were 441 total COVID-19 cases reported on Monday, June 8. As of Monday, June 15, Hays County reported 938 total cases. That is a 112.7 percent increase in total cases in the last week. While the number of tests administered also increased in the last week, it has not increased to the same extent over the same time frame.

On June 8, the county had received the results of 4,799 tests. On June 15, the county had received results from an additional 963 tests showing in a 20.1 percent increase in total tests over the same time frame. There are currently 112 tests still pending at the time of press.

The COVID-19 numbers have increased across the board in Hays County with the exception of deaths. Five Hays County residents, one of them from the Wimberley Valley, have passed away from COVID-19.

As of Monday, 267 people in Hays County had recovered from the disease, and there are 666 active cases, up from 203 on Monday of last week. Of those, 400 are in San Marcos and largely in the 20-29 year old demographic.

So far, 46 people have been hospitalized with 14 of those currently still in the hospital, which is a 133 percent increase in the last week. On June 8, there were six people currently in the hospital. Until this last week, the amount of people hospitalized in Hay County had largely remained in the low to mid single digits.
