Constables nab burglar on the loose

Hays County Sheriff’s deputies were involved in a high-speed chase of two burglars in Woodcreek North on Wednesday, and the offenders crashed their vehicle. They both headed out on foot with one of them captured near the scene of the crash on Mesquite Trail. The was on the loose. Later in the afternoon, the call came over the radio. A resident had given the offender a ride to Shamrock.

They had a description and a picture on the car’s computer.

“Cody (Cheatham, Deputy Constable) heard the call. ‘Let’s go to Shamrock,’ he said… (They left in different cars) I locked eyes on (the suspect) and then Cody came on the radio and said ‘that’s him.’ He saw Cody and dropped his head real quick. I got to him and cuffed him. Cody got there real quick,” Deputy Constable Donny Torres said.

It was a Sheriff’s Office case and the sheriff’s department was soon there to take the perpetrator to the Hays County Jail. In the end, Adrian Montoya and Sergio Vela were arrested for burglary and evading arrest.

“The Constable’s office is a community police oriented, we’re not chasing someone down each day,” Constable Ray Helm said. “We know every street and every corner. The constables are here all the time. If something is out of the ordinary, lets get on it.” He continued. “Every now and then a kid that lives here (is a burglar). But when we get one from out of town, they’re gonna get caught,” Helm said.
