Calling all storytellers, poets and ‘really good liars’

Coming in October of 2023, Wimberley StoryFest will host another in its series of events celebrating ‘Story in all its Forms.’

The three-day festival, to be held October 12–14, will focus on the hill country heritage: stories of settlers, cowboys, ranchers, cedar choppers, outlaws and all those who tamed this part of Texas and made it their home. Accordingly, the event will be held at Pioneer Town in Wimberley.

The weekend lineup will feature singer- songwriters on Thursday, October 12; story as film on Friday, October 13; and a line-up of poets and storytellers in the oral tradition on Saturday, October 14. It’ll be a weekend for story, made even bigger by the Solar Eclipse on Saturday.

Wimberley StoryFest is currently looking for storytellers and poets to share tall tales, legends, funny anecdotes, ghost stories, poems, family histories and — as they put it — “really good lies.” Stories and poems should be no longer than 15 minutes.

“Our audiences are open-hearted and encouraging,” the group said in a statement. “The indoor performance space is small and welcoming. We are a community of story- lovers eager to promote the art of the oral tradition. This is an excellent opportunity for established as well as first-time storytellers to join us.”

After a review, finalists will be invited to audition for a spot in the line-up. Selected storytellers and poets will tell their story twice on October 14 and will receive a $100 honorarium.

Anyone interested in participating will find more information at wimberleystoryfest. org. Wimberley Story-Fest is an initiative of Wimberley Arts and Cultural Alliance.
