Burleson challenges Becerra in primary for Hay County Judge

Brandon Burleson, a local business owner, announced his candidacy in the Democratic Primary for Hays County Judge.

Burleson’s announcement on Nov. 29 came days after incumbent Judge Ruben Becerra released a statement that he would be running for re-election. Though new to the political scene, Burleson has a history of involvement in the Hays County community, having graduated from San Marcos High School and Texas State University. A board member of the Texas State Friends of Fine Arts & Communications, Burleson is also an active volunteer with the San Marcos Heritage Association, the First United Methodist Church, Jackson Chapel UMC’s soup kitchen and Court Appointed Special Advocates.

As an extension of his community service, Burleson said he wants to help increase efficiency and innovation in Hays County operations.

“One of the fastest growing locations in the United States, Hays County — and its people — deserve leadership that puts their interests first,” Burleson said. “The people of Hays County can have no doubts that every penny we spend is being spent as wisely as possible.”

“Holding the tax rate steady is important, but it is not enough,” he continued. “As property assessments increase, a stable tax rate still results in a higher tax bill. We must do better. And this will be one of my highest priorities as County Judge.”

Burleson said his campaign was initially inspired by his grandmother, Rose Brooks, often called the matriarch of Hays County Democrats.

“My grandma, a woman of strong faith, taught me the importance of working for a better community, particularly for those who do not have a place at the table, since before I could even read or write,” he explained. “Her example of working for opportunity, equality and a responsive government have not only made me proud but has also stayed with me.”

Burleson scheduled a series of informal get-togethers to hear public opinions and concerns.

His campaign will hold a combined kickoff gala, children’s toy drive and voter registration event on Saturday, Dec. 11. The event will take place from 4 to 10 p.m. at the Railyard Bar & Grill in San Marcos.
