‘Welcome to Wimberley’ sign destroyed, being replaced

If you think back and you weren’t born here in Wimberley, what was the first thing you saw when you entered the city, or village, limits? Coming from either way on Ranch Road 12, from Dripping and San Marcos or from Kyle on FM 3237 the ‘Welcome to Wimberley’ sign is at the top of most people’s list. They have been in place since the 1980s.

However, the iconic welcoming sign on the way into town from San Marcos is no longer there. A recent car wreck destroyed the sign leaving nothing but the tattered edges of its history.

On top of adding seasonal decorations to Cypress Creek Bridge and planting wildflower seeds all over town, Keep Wimberley Beautiful has maintained the welcome signs for years.

The welcome signs are decorated for each season, pumpkins and Halloween decorations, Christmas’ deer and decorations, Easter, Fourth of July. They just put that little extra sparkle on our already beautiful area. They really do a remarkable thing, a lot of them unnoticed.

But the question is not if it will be replaced but rather when and how. And community input is now needed.

In a Facebook post, Keep Wimberley Beautiful said they “would like community input on the design, which KWB will present to the City. So our questions to the community are: “Should we duplicate what was there to maintain the history? Should the design include the water wheel, which is now part of the City’s logo? Or should we go in a totally different direction? Or somewhere in between?”

A fourth sign on FM 2325 might also be added, welcoming people coming from Blanco and parts west. Both projects are open to ideas from the community.

“This is in the planning stages, but input on this is welcomed as well,” the post continued.

Keep Wimberley Beautiful needs ideas from all ages! Please send your thoughts, your sketches; anything that will communicate your vision of what the new sign should look like. The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. on July 31, 2021.

Please send questions or your idea/sketches via email to Keepwimberley [email protected] or via regular mail to Keep Wimberley Beautiful, PO Box 2253, Wimberley TX 78676.
