‘Historic’ new One

#6 2019

Wimberley is adding a new school for the first time since 2011 when Jacob’s Well Elementary was opened. Jacob’s Well was the first new school opened in Wimberley in more than a decade since Wimberley High School was built.

The bond was passed in 2018, and plans came together quickly after that. Along the way, discussion began about making this school special. In late July plans for a One Water School were finalized.

The new primary school will be the first in the state of Texas to be built to the One Water standard with plans to include rainwater and HVAC condensate collection together with wastewater treatment and reuse in the construction of the new school, focusing on conservation of natural resources, green storm water infrastructure, open space preservation and education.

Unique items will be included like clear pipes throughout the school making the rainwater collection visible to students when it rains. Beyond the extensive environmental measures, the new school will be an approximately 90,600-square-foot campus slated to open in the summer of 2020 ahead of the academic year. The $31.3 million bond project, given the go ahead by Wimberley residents in May 2018, has a capacity for 800 students in pre-k through second grade with 40 classrooms, a gymnasium, a library, a cafeteria and several smaller reading and math intervention classrooms.

Groundbreaking for the school was held in late July.

“We’re excited this project is underway, and are really looking forward to that first-day of school experience for all our younger students at this spacious, state-of-the art, green campus, a year from now,” said Dwain York, Wimberley ISD Superintendent of Schools

The school is located at the corner of Winters Mill Parkway and Ranch Road 12, right in the middle of Wimberley’s natural features Jacob’s Well and Blue Hole Regional Park. With a school already named after Jacob’s Well, it was a fitting tribute to name the new campus Blue Hole Primary. A movement by former students to name the school after long-time Wimberley ISD Principal and Board of Trustee Tuck Blythe resulted in the new school’s gymnasium being named after the influential member of the community. The name was selected in November on 2019.

The school is scheduled to open in July of 2020 before the next school year.
