Hays County Constable Precinct 3

Deatherage to challenge for seat

Hays County Precinct 1 Deputy Constable Jessica R. Deatherage has announced that she will be running for Hays County Constable Precinct 3 in the November 2020 election. The primary election will be held on March 3, 2020.

Deatherage’s campaign website touts 10 years of relevant service in law enforcement. She started as an Emergency Dispatcher for the Lockhart Police Department in August of 2010 before going through the Law Enforcement Academy at San Antonio College. In 2013, Deatherage was hired as a patrol office with the Luling Police Department. She has been through specialized training schools, including the Hays County Sheriff’s Office ALERRT Terrorism Response to Active Shooter course, and the Patrol Procedures for Rural Officers course. In 2018, she was hired as a deputy constable for Hays County Precinct 1.

“I became intimately acquainted with the unique law enforcement aspects of smaller communities while there, including some similar to Wimberley: I have responded to many animal control calls – from wrangling snakes (without tongs once) to relocating animals,” Deatherage said in a press release. “I’ve also worked my fair share of low-water crossings and been on both sides of that radio for water rescue calls. In addition, contrary to popular belief, I have indeed worked traffic control and school zones. I would see we continue the school traffic enforcement that has been implemented.”

Deatherage and her family moved in Wimberley in 2018.

“Yes, Wimberley is my home,” Deatherage said. “It’s true I am an ‘outsider’ in the sense I am not from Wimberley, but am no stranger to Hays County, having served in various law enforcement roles in the nearby communities of Lockhart and Luling prior to my current role. I was born in San Marcos and graduated from San Marcos High School. My husband and I moved to Wimberley in February 2018 strictly for the quality of life and outstanding school district. We became so committed to our new community that for our daughter’s first year at Wimberley High we drove her back and forth from Kyle until we found our current home here.”

Deatherage said that she is running because she feels called to serve her community.

“I may not have the amount of training Constable Helm has had, but I spent years on the front lines of street patrol in addition to dispatch,” Deatherage said. “I spent most of my career in smaller departments with smaller budgets, but what I lack in classroom training I more than make up in practical knowledge. I am thankful for Constable Helm’s contributions to our community, but I also feel a strong sense to serve the community I am proud to call home. I hope the citizens of Wimberley will allow me the opportunity to speak and answer questions and let me learn from you as well.”
