A whole Steer Roast is for charity

When a whole roasted, split steer is grilled over a fire, think about it. The sound and the smell of beef sizzling, slowly, permeating your entire breath, so you can almost feel it, mask on or off. It has that Old West feel to it.

This Saturday, November 14 the Blanco River Meat Company, located at the corner of Farm to Market Road 3237 and Rolling Oaks will be hosting a whole steer roast, all for the benefit of the Sunshine Kids, a non-profit benefiting kids with cancer all across North America.

“We approached the Hays County Sheriffs... and asked, “What is best?” They suggested the Sunshine Kids for kids with cancer.”

A whole steer roast? “It’s about 423 pounds and would feed about 1,000 people. There’ll definitely be food to take home,” Grill master Arturo Ramon said. “There will be two whole pigs, two whole alligators, a bunch of quail and octopi.”

The steer is local from Double J Ranch, with Twisted X Brewery, and Treaty Oak Bourbon offering adult beverages. Keeping with the local feel, King Feed is one of the sponsors.

The roast is actually a long-term event, starting the day before. “It takes 22 to 26 hours to cook…(with a) 3 p.m. serving, delectable grilled appetizers by some of your favorite pit masters about every half hour, until the roast is ready.”

If you’d like, reserve a spot for this event to help with the Sunshine Kids through the Hays County Sheriff’s office.
