When it’s hot, the library is very cool

Sure school is over and there are a million things planned with the newfound freedom. But after a few weeks and 90-plus degree temperatures, things can get boring in a short time. Coming up with new ideas for kids to do during summer vacation is difficult, but to the rescue is the Wimberley Village Library.

For starters, every child should be engaged in reading with so many days away from school. The library’s Summer Incentive Program rewards readers with prizes for the number of books read. Children fill out a form at the library, and then they can collect a prize. There is no limit to the prizes the child can receive.

Every weekday has something for the children at 10:30 a.m.. Monday is Toddler Time for 0 to 3 year olds, Tuesday is Hands on Fun for 5 and up, Wednesday is the aptly named Wacky Wednesday, Thursday is Kids Academy of ages 8 and up, and Friday it is Preschool Story Time for ages 3 to 5.

Wednesday, May 30 is also the kickoff of the Summer Reading Program. It starts at 10:30 a.m. with a musical performance with Lloyd Miller sponsored by the Friends of the Wimberley Village Library. After the performance treats, horseback rides and more happen for the kickoff.

“Wacky Wednesday will have big performances by magicians, musicians and science presentations to pique the interest of any child,” Emily McDonald, Youth Services Director said.

After that kickoff every Wednesday will be special with Silly Sparkles the Clown on 6/6, a reptile show 6/13, Gertrude Mc-Fuzz 6/20, and Science Shows on 6/27. July 11 has a Goldilocks performance, 7/18 Oscar Munoz a magician, and on 6/25 Dinosaur George.

Tuesdays will also have 10:30 presentations for those 5 and up. Registration is required for:

June 5 is Blue Hole Park teachers with Skulls and Skins, Geology on June 12, Book Binding on June 19, Amphibians on June 26, an improv workshop on July 3, Naturalists on the local environment on July 10, Yoga for kids on July 17, and a cartooning workshop on July 24.

Kid’s Academy on Thursdays for 8 years old and up is at 10:30 a.m. It also has registration required. Kids Academy explores different professions such as scientists, engineers, astronauts, vets, and more.
