WAG Rescue’s new Puppy Nursery

WAG Rescue (Wimberley Adoption Group & Rescue) is celebrating its tenth anniversary. Since June 2009, over 1,160 dogs and puppies have been rescued and placed into loving, permanent homes.

As a volunteer supported, non-profit public charity, they’re dedicated to serving the Wimberley area by helping any dog or puppy in need with the required medical care and training, so they have the very best chance for adoption.

During this time, the group has had a variety of challenges. The most recent being the need to house and support pregnant dogs or mothers with their puppies. Incoming expectant female dogs and their puppies have a unique set of needs from the other dogs that are rescued. Previous vaccination histories are unknown, and the possibility of the puppies contracting parvo or distemper is always a top concern.

“Being unable to take in expectant mothers or their puppies was heartbreaking,” related Barbara Foss, WAG Rescue’s President. “We had no way to isolate them from the other dogs.” Stopgap solutions included finding volunteers willing to foster the mother and her puppies, or, in desperate situations, areas at the WAG Rescue Refuge that could be isolated were used. Neither of these were reliable or sustainable solutions, but it was the best they could do.

Pat Davis, WAG Rescue’s Executive Director and Co-founder said, “The need became so great that at our last WAGala fundraising event, we announced that a separate nursery building would be a perfect solution to help these animals.”

The building of a Nursery caught the attention of their supporters. The funds required to purchase the building materials were generously donated and the construction of the nursery began in January 2019.

“One of the things we love about the Wimberley community is that people care so much and step up when the need arises,” said Susan Martin, WAG Rescue Board Member. “We received the donated funds and four of our regular volunteers offered up their building and construction skills.”

The volunteers worked tirelessly and applied their unique skills and expertise. The building was constructed from the ground up and completed at the beginning of March. A new sidewalk leading up to the Nursery was donated and poured by one of WAG Rescue’s generous supporters, Myers Concrete Construction.

“The WAG Rescue Nursery has been such an important addition to our refuge,” stated Barbara Foss. “We have been able to safely serve the medical needs of expectant female dogs and provide a safe environment for them to wean their puppies. We know that more will be coming and with our new nursery, we will be ready.”

The Wimberley Community has been strong supporters of WAG Rescue throughout the last ten years. The new WAG Rescue Nursery is a reality thanks to the help and commitment from their Wimberley friends and businesses.
