Valley comes together to fill food needs

Power out, broken pipes, no water, sub-zero temperatures breaking all sorts of weather records, snow upon snow. There were endless stories of hardship. It was the week of the worst of times. But then again it was also the best of times.

Neighbors pitched in and helped each other, knocking on doors just to see just how you were doing and helping anyway they could. But a week later, the aftermath and neighbors dealing without water, power and with it food going bad, something had to be done.

Pastor Jose Abaroa of Cypress Creek Church heard the stories and an idea was sparked. There had to be a way to help all those in the valley that need help. “That’s what this community is all about, you see a need, you meet a need,”

Pastor Jose said.

Barnabas Connection’s Kate Sowell and others were contacted.

“Everyone needed everything…Crisis Bread Basket, Hays County Food Bank, the Fig Tree, Amigos de Jesus, Heart of Texas Pregnancy Center, Brookshire Bros. donated gift cards… 50 cases of water were donated by HEB,” Sowell said.

Ninety families were preregistered, with each family’s particular needs for food pre-packed in a plastic tub. Each tub was numbered with a family’s number. Each family received their number to display while checking in. Driving through the line, they would receive their particular tub, stocked and delivered by volunteers.

It’s just what the valley does for each other; help out each other in times of need.
