Holy superhero! Batman made an appearance at WOW!

Town goes batty for Wings of Wimberley

It is a tale of “If you build it, they will come.” TxDOT built it, and yes they did come, Mexican free-tailed bats that is, from under the Cypress Creek Bridge through town.

Bats have proliferated in Central Texas in recent years, and the Wimberley Valley Arts and Cultural Alliance celebrated the little critters Friday through Sunday on both sides of the creek. There they came, swooping out in the thousands from the seams in the underside of the bridge around sunset.

They came in droves, waves of them into the night to eat their fill of nasty insects. They can consume approximately 1,000 tons of insects nightly in the Hill Country, a large proportion of which are agricultural pests.

“I’m very happy to say that Wings Over Wimberley did exactly what we hoped for. It brought awareness of the bats that reside under the Cypress Creek Bridge and it brought a fun festival to Wimberley,” said WOW Committee Chairperson, Pamela Rudd.

Nature and craft booths with bat information experts on hand, local music was rockin’ as was the bat inspired food and beer. Even the Batman made an appearance. The Wimberley Valley Arts and Cultural Alliance really knows how to throw a bat-rific event. WOW what a time!
