Things will go bump in the night at Wimberley Playhouse

Based on the enthusiastic response of young people and parents to the Wimberley Players’ first workshop, the second in the ongoing series is scheduled for Saturday Sept. 29 from 9:30 AM until 4:00 PM.

“With a nod to the season, we decided to look at “things that scare us,” said Monica Michell, who returns with Laura Haygood to facilitate the workshop. Both leaders are theatre professionals active with the Players for many years. The all-day, participatory workshop is designed for kids aged 10 – 14.

“Some want to be in theatre, but they all discover that making theatre is the most fun and rewarding of all,” Michell continued. Participants work together to create a script, exploring improvisation and characterization—and learning to transform their work from page to stage. Enrollment is limited to 15, so early registration online is recommended. The workshop fee is $30.

New and returning participants will find that each Discovery Theatre Workshop is different and each is designed as a stand-alone experience. Each workshop culminates in an original “work in progress” that participants share with family and friends at the end of the day.

“Regardless of the theme, each workshop in the series will give kids a unique platform for finding and using their voices through drama,” said Laura Haygood. “It’s a safe and structured opportunity for them to think about and talk about what’s important to them.”

David Bisett, president of the Wimberley Players board, expressed thanks to the volunteer facilitators for the many hours devoted to the workshop, before and during the event. “These workshops offer our area kids the chance to discover the power of theatre as a way of understanding themselves and making themselves heard,” he said. “The kids report they also have a lot of fun.”

Participants bring a sack lunch and water. Snacks and fruit provided by Wimberley Players volunteers. Registration at www.wimberleyplayers.org. Questions, please call Laura at 512-757-2773.
