San Marcos church repairs downtown Wimberley home

In June, the Sozo church of San Marcos held their First Annual “Love Your City” Weekend. The help extended beyond the boundaries of San Marcos and dipped into Wimberley.

“This is simply a way Sozo Church can love and serve the city and region with the tangible love of Christ,” said Steve Smothers, the Lead Equipping Pastor at Sozo Church.

Over one hundred of the church’s members volunteered for service projects around the area. Although most of the projects were in San Marcos including Discovery Center Garden clean up, Hays Co Food Bank, School Fuel Facility clean up (SMCISD/ACC Campus) one project helped a Wimberley lady whose home needed repair.

Smothers was interim pastor of the Chapel of the Hills, and through that he knew of Carol White as a parishioner. “In time, she joined Sozo Church in San Marcos, and while based in San Marcos, (Sozo) has a large number of members in Wimberley and the surrounding area. So while our event is called “Love Your City,” we felt it important to go where we knew of need,” Smothers continued.

“Refurbishing Carol White’s house was just a start for the church. Sozo Church began in 2015 with the purpose of being a Family on Mission. Practically, this looks like reflecting the love, compassion and service of Jesus everywhere we go. This includes loving widows, orphans, the poor, college students and those in need in San Marcos, Wimberley, New Braunfels and in our region where Sozo families live.”

Sozo’s mission according to their website:

“The church functions best not as a building or an organization but as a people, a community, a family formed around the presence of God. This is the picture portrayed about the people of God from the Biblical narrative. Loving God with all we are and laying down our lives for each other should create an atmosphere that causes people to thrive and the name of Jesus to be honored in the world around them.”
