Recycling

A friend suggested that I write a column on how to recycle in a responsible way so here is my effort. First of all, the Hays County Recycling and Solid Waste location in Wimberley is open from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Tuesday thru Saturday. They are closed on Sunday and Monday and official holidays. The center is located at the very end of CR 278 (Carney Lane, 1691.) where you can pick up a one page explanation of their procedures. Their phone number is 512-618-7175.

Some general rules that caught my attention follow.

Household trash: $15.00 cubic yard (CY) ($2.00 minimum); Construction Material: $25.00 CY or $10.00 min.

Metal Debris $20.00 CY $10.00 minimum; Brush $25.00 CY

Prices for other items such as refrigerators and freezers (must be empty), washers and dryers, etc. furniture, mattresses, tires, etc. are detailed on the guideline sheet or you can all and ask for the price.

Check in with attendant before unloading (must be before 4:00 p.m.), all recyclables must be rinsed and clean, remove all lids and caps, sort all recycling into proper containers, break down cardboard.

ACCEPTED items: #1 and #2 plastic bottles only (soda/water/milk), corrugated cardboard, paper, aluminum and tin cans, batteries, motor oil and antifreeze. NOT ACCEPTED: Hazardous wastes, pool chemicals, gasoline, diesel, brake fluid, transmission fluid, flammable liquids, #3,5,7 type plastic containers, flat plastic, plastic bags, food boxes or wax containers.

Only CASH or CHECKS are accepted! NO CREDIT CARDS!

Hope these rules help. Other recycling centers or private contractor rules may differ. Please check.

MAIN RULE! …DO RECYCLE!
