Real world life skills for teenagers

Attention all parents, grandparents guardians and other interested individuals. Classes are being provided for 13 to 18 year olds that will help them in life. The lessons offered will make life easier and young adults on their own will not have to rely on “learning the hard way.”

One thing that was available “back in the day” was Home Economics. This was a leftover from when dad went to work and mom stayed at home with the children and took care of the home’s necessities. “Home Ec” helped teenagers to learn the basics of cooking, buying groceries and other chores needed around the house.

Modern lifestyles are no longer that cut and dried, to say the least. Mom and dad are in the workforce and both are faced with everyday chores. Not all moms and dads live together. Having time to teach the basics can get overlooked with job pressures, having to work two jobs, etc., and sometimes it is quicker and easier as an adult to just get the chore done by “doing it myself.”

County Extension Agent-Family & Community Health of Hays County, along with the Texas A & M Agricultural Extension Service has an innovative program starting with the new year. It is open to residents of Hays County.

Each month a different subject will be taught to the teenagers, ones that will help in adult life.

“We will offer eleven classes, one Saturday each month, everything from cooking to servicing your car…it is all free, no charge, lessons they will use the rest of their lives,” Kate Blankenship, County Extension Agent said.

Each of the classes will take place at 200 Stillwater, in Wimberley at the Hays County satellite office. The first class will be Cooking Basics on January 5th from 9-11 a.m. Call the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension office to sign-up at 512.393.2120.
