Nothing trivial about Civic Clubs’ Trivia Night

The Capitol of Nepal? Kathmandu, check. Audrey Hepburn Oscars? Two including the Humanitarian award. Most Consecutive Baseball Games played? Cal Ripken. What is the scientific sign for Titanium? Ti.

Sounds hard but it isn’t. It’s easy with Google, a few keystrokes here and there. But without it? Maybe getting eight brains, er uh, players together to make up a Trivia Team can work, be fun and raise funds for the community? It’s a lot of fun. Teams can be of all ages, as everyone knows something. Maybe one person knows current popular music today and one knows the heroes of WWII.

“When asked, most people look at you and say, ‘I’m not that smart.’ They think you have to be some sort of genius,” Shelly Esser, Director of the event for the Wimberley Community Civic Club, said. “It’s a collection of people, eight brains to a table…It’s not like school, where the teacher will call on you. It’s all on the group.”

Group-wise, there are prizes. This year will feature a Spirit Award, for the best group’s costumes. “It’s an award for people who want to make a splash,” Esser said.

First Prize for the trivia knowledge is $400, or $50 each.

The annual competition is in its sixth year, with each year getting better. Tables are limited to eight, an easy number to work with and it’s a time to have fun and not like serving on a committee.

“Last year, the judges really camped it up. And this year, the judges, well a surprise is guaranteed to be hilarious, just to set the mood,” she said. It all starts at 6 p.m. and runs until 10 p.m. with a catered meal from Miss Red’s Place Catering. The event is BYOB.

The WCCC is all about giving back to the community, supporting non-profits and the youth of Wimberley with scholarships. Other events that the WCCC holds are the Crawfish Boil on March 28, the Spring Fashion Show and brunch on April 27, and everybody’s favorite, the Wine Walk on April 2. These events help raise funds along with the private dinner parties that are held in members’ homes.

According to their website the WCCC hopes “to nurture a strong community spirit through service and financial support while fostering lasting friendships among the members.”

This is something they have accomplished now in their forty-first year.

Tickets for Trivia Night are $42, with multiple gift buckets and raffles to participate in. It will be a lot of laughs and a lot of fun.

“And it all goes back to Wimberley,” Shelley Esser said.
