Mexican Oregano

For a while, I was longing for color in my yard. Now I have it! Pink Oleanders, both dwarf and full size, Yellow Lantana, Pride of Barbados, and Mexican Oregano are now in full and luxurious bloom. The latest rains have been especially welcome. Thank you, Mother Nature.

All of these plants are quite showy, easy to grow, and readily available in our nurseries.

My neighbors comment especially on the showiness and beauty of the Pride of Barbados and the Mexican Oregano. Pride of Barbados is a small shrub that grows about five feet tall and 4 – 5 feet wide. Numerous branches each seem to display a lovely cluster of bright orange and yellow, eye-catching flowers which last for some time. My Mexican Oregano bush, also about five feet tall, bushes out to almost 8 feet wide. The light purple flowers are truly abundant. Both of these plants make good cut flowers.

The leaves of the Oregano are also a tasty herb, somewhat similar in taste to thyme. This plant is extremely easy to root by cutting about a foot or so length of it, plucking it into a pot or soil (or directly into the earth), watering it and then waiting patiently for it to root and become another lovely plant. Butterflies and other insects enjoy these flowers, also. So, you have everything to gain by visiting your nurseries and going home with one or more of these highly satisfying delights of Mother Nature. If you are interested, drive to the end of the north culde-sac on Mesa Drive to 101 and you can view these plants for yourself.
