Rescued horses are at the only horse rescue ranch in Mexico.
Making a difference-Baja California style
Baja California is quite a ways to travel to. But two Wimberley friends – since kindergarten – are there and they are trying to make a difference in the world. It looks like they may be succeeding.
Krystal Redmon and Meghan Speakerman have been friends for a long time. Just recently though, they decided to team up at Pretty Horses Rescue after Meghan travelled to Baja California and decided she wanted to be a part of the organization. She offered her help with marketing, social media and booking the ranch as a wedding venue. This would be a business side of the horse rescue organization.
Pretty Horses Rescue started back in 2007 when Krystal ran across a mare and her foal in a very distressed state at a rundown riding stable in Baja. Krystal was able to purchase the mare and foal and the rescue operation was started. It is south of San Diego, so not that far from the US.
“As of now we have 36 rescue horses, 18 dogs, we also do dog rescues. She (Krystal) will take in anything, baby pigs, macaws,” Meghan said. “Located off the beaten path, the ranch is located on the top of a mountain but you can see the ocean. Baja is a dusty peninsula.”
The rescue ranch is a non-profit and is able to stay afloat due to events such as riding lessons, chili cook-offs, trail rides and donations. Equine therapy for kids is also near the top of the list where the rescue can help children as well as the horses.
“This is one of Krystal’s passions,” Meghan continued.
“We cater and do events in San Diego. It takes so much money, taking care of the horses costs money,” Meghan said. “Otherwise the horses would be slaughtered for dog food.”
Recently, Meghan got on board to help set up the ranch as a wedding venue and is excited about it. “I have to learn about horses, and in doing so learn about myself… How lucky am I living and working on a ranch in Mexico,” she said.
Krystal and Meghan are making a difference, although a ways away from Wimberley. But it’s the same lessons that many from Wimberley have learned, that neighbors help neighbors for a cause that is bigger than oneself.
It is the only horse rescue in Mexico.
