KWVH Pledge Drive is Fun Drive

Like taxes due in the spring, community radio pledge time is here once again. But that is far from a bad thing. Providing local news, artists and talk shows of local interest is what a community radio station is all about. Local oriented programing is what is provided.

The funds that are needed to keep the radio station on the air have helped the station transmit local programming to the Wimberley Valley, whereas just a few short years ago, there was no radio station.

In the in those years the station has been on the air, they now have over 168 hours of locally produced programing with more to come. A few new programs are in the works with more plans for the station’s location.

The fishbowl, or the studio that faces Old Kyle Road, has been open and most of the daily shows are now broadcast from there right in the open a few feet from the Wimberley Square.

“It’s just good music you can’t get anywhere else… such as Andy Bertleson and Coach. We’re pretty unique with lots of Texas Hill Country music. Coach is a wonder producing the girls and kid talk, Mark Lombardi and the Name in Chalk program,” Station Manager Mike Crusham said.

But in order to best serve the residents of the valley, funds are needed to help the station, even though there are more than 70 volunteers.

“Our goals are, 1. Continue operations and 2. Improve signal coverage, as a new transmitter is needed to improve the station’s signal. A Floresville station (also 94.1FM) interferes with our signal. We’ve been looking and surveying Wimberley. We’ll improve the coverage,” Crusham said.

Other new board members are Christy Degenhart, Becky McCullough, Dixie Newnam, Tom Reslewic, Mike August and Josh Smith along with board members emeritus Susan Raybuck and Dr. Pierce make up the new board.

Construction will soon start on a performance stage behind Community Pizza and should be finished by the end of May and already has been approved by the city. McCoy’s is partnering with the station to get it built.

“It will be another venue for the town. We’ll have awesome broadcasts from there,” Crusham said. Lions Club donated a portable sound system to the station, which makes the venue optimum.

If you listen to the station, you are aware that the pledge drive is winding down with the Cinco de Mayo (May 5) celebration. It all starts with the Leaning Pear’s Sunday “Cinco de Mayo” Brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Immediately following that at 3:30 to 8 p.m. Wimberley Valley Radio has a Cinco de Mayo Celebration to wrap-up the Spring Pledge Drive at the Flite Acres Foundry and Ranch for an evening of food, music and fun.

Musical guest Nathan Brown begins the day and Hector Ward and the Big Time headline the evening with a wall of sound. Adult beverages will be served along with food and music. Tickets are on sale at $45 each with under 12 free. For more information see the station’s website at:
