Join a Keep Wimberley Beautiful clean up

As the old saying goes, the more things change the more they remain the same. This is especially true in Wimberley with Keep Wimberley Beautiful and Covid-19. Fall, with Halloween right around the corner, has been a tricky season the past few years.

As usual, with the changing south to north winds, it stirs up a lot of refuse around on the roads. Just as usual, it is time to clean up the roads and neighborhoods across the valley.

Keep Wimberley Beautiful to the rescue. It’s cleanup time again and it’s an offcial Fall Clean Up event in conjunction with Keep Texas Beautiful. Yes, they’ll be no waiting in line to get supplies because there will be no lines. It’ll come to you, if you are interested in helping this community-wide cleanup.

Here’s how you can volunteer and help the community while protecting yourself during a KWB social distancing cleanup. This year there’s a Main Day, Saturday, October 31, Halloween morning. In the past, the start time was around 9 a.m. for check in, but this year you can help on the Main Day or a few days before or after, whatever time you decide.

Once you contact KWB and let them know you are going to participate, a road or neighborhood is selected. Then the supplies come to you.

“We are prepping drop off supply bags to include bags, gloves, a mask, a reflective vest and grabber if they want. The pack will include some thank you extras. These will be dropped off at people’s homes or can be picked up a few days in advance of the event,” Sarah Atwood said, one organizers of the KWB event. Keep Texas Beautiful donated supplies.

A phone number will be provided to help or coordinate the efforts. The clean ups are held periodically throughout the year to preserve why we’re living in Wimberley, not only for the natural beauty but also for that small town feel.

A lot of that is courtesy of KWB, such as the seasonally decorated Cypress Creek Bridge, Welcome to Wimberley signs and spruced up roadways. In the past during the cleanups, there were some unusual objects found and disposed, of like old shoes and tires, but nothing to be scared about.

“People do not have to do it on Saturday. We have some folks that will be doing in the days leading up as they have specific roads that they want to tackle and can’t do the Saturday,” Atwood said.

“We are asking for as little as an hour’s help to a few hours if they can do that... based on volunteer sign up (will give us) numbers on how much roadside we can tackle, and what areas need the most help. If people have ideas then they can email them to us.”

Trash will be disposed at select Adopt A Highway signs in the county to collect.
