New St. Stephen’s Head of school Will Webber is very familiar with the area.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal School hires new Head of School

Someone well known in education in these parts, Will Webber has taken the position of the school’s principal. Webber has taught and has been an administrator for 18 of his thirty plus years of experience in education.

“I grew up in the Highlands near Baytown and the San Jacinto Monument. I graduated from Ross Sterling High in Baytown. I grew up on the Coast, a boy on the beach,’ Webber said.

Dad was a teacher and professor of Spanish and did a lot of volunteer work in Central America including Mexico and places south. Inheriting his wanderlust from his father, he has traveled all over the world.

Mom was a reporter and editor for the Baytown and Galveston newspapers. He had early jobs, delivering newspapers, working at a retail store in customer service at 12. He also worked in construction and as as waiter.

He graduated from SWT (Texas State) with a B.A. in History and Political Science. “I said, I don’t want to be a teacher.” But sure enough it happened. His teacher wife said, “But we can go on vacations together.”

He got a teaching job in Cameron, in East Texas. He was named “Teacher of the year” for 1991 for the entire Hays ISD. He received hid Administrator’s Certification from Trinity University and made his way to Central Texas, an Administrator/Principal in Comal ISD, New Braunfels ISD, Hays CISD and San Antonio ISD. He has also worked at Charter schools.

“I became an administrator…because its ability to touch more children’s lives and maker as difference.” He continued. “The most important thing is having a climate of caring, something the children can feel, they can be a part of. Because children don’t care what you know, they want to know that you care.”

No stranger to Wimberley the couple moved here in 1988. His wife was teaching in Dripping Springs and he was teaching near Canyon Lake at the time. At the present time they have a daughter at Wimberley High School who plays percussion and an older son who graduated from Trinity University.

He and his wife have been members of St. Stephens Church since they moved here. But he has never been employed at the school before, but both he and his wife have done volunteer work for the church.

The school and church are two separate entities and independent of each other, which as th3 principal it can be a doubled edged sword.

“We’re independent from the church to some degree. We keep separate books, the church and the school. But we also support each other…(we’re an) independent school, not an ISD. There is less regulations but also more challenges,” he said. During his tenure as Head of School, he does have plans for the St. Stephen school.

“I hope the school continues to grow and provides a nurturing environment… It really is a caring environment and it is a Christian School,” Head of School Will Webber said.
