Halloween plans abound

The air is crisp, and it is jacket weather. The cypress on the Blanco is turning color and the 100+ degree days look like they are behind us. Goblins, ghouls and otherworldly creatures will soon be knocking on some doors or having fun around town to celebrate Halloween.

The kickoff for the celebrating will be on Friday October 26 from 7 to 10 p.m. with the opening of Haunted Pioneer Town. The 7A Ranch and the Wimberley Players have teamed up to provide an Old West town haunted with pop out goblins and spooks around every corner, storytellers posted around the streets, a gruesome cemetery and much more spookiness than you can imagine.

There’s also family time, that’s a little less scary during Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 4 p.m. with crafts, a creepy petting zoo and more. Later those days the spookiness returns from 7 to 10 p.m.

An original old-time radio play by Don Cunningham, based on the works of local author Bert Wall, will be performed in the Opera House at regular intervals throughout the weekend.

“The radio play, “Tales From the Devil’s Backbone,” will also be broadcast live Halloween night on KWVH 94.1 FM-Wimberley Valley Radio at 7:00 p.m.,” Robin Wood said, who with Laura Haygood created the plans for the haunted town.

On Halloween proper, activities around town kick into high gear. The Wimberley Square and the Wimberley Merchants Association will be open for the annual Trick or Treat csndy handouts from 4 to 7 p.m. Just down the Old Kyle Road, the Wimberley Players will be putting on the radio the above mentioned play, live and the Lumberyard, will be staging Wimberley Fright night with a bouncy house, carnival games and with a live pumpkin patch from 4 to 8:30 p.m.

And last but not the least on Green Acres at the Wimberley Fire Station is Halloween with Wimberley Fire and Rescue on Wednesday from 6 to 8:30 p.m.. As always it is a “This is the Safe Halloween which the kids enjoy every year,” Fire Chief Carroll Czichos said. Games, treats, big fire trucks and hamburgers and hot dogs provided by Cowboy Church, right across the street.

There’s also two Pet Parades going on. On Saturday October 27. Both benefit WAG. At 10 a.m. the parade will start at the Ozon¬a Bank lower parking lot and proceed to the Square and then end at the crosswalk at Dovetails. Entry for each pet is $5. “There might even be a miniature pony…one of the awards will be for best kisser, “ WAG volunteer Donna McKennon of Chulita’s said.

Later that day, the 22nd Annual Costume Contest for Pets will be at Deer Creek of Wimberley 555 FM 3237. Dress up your pets for a great cause, WAG. A donation at and your pet on a leash (or otherwise contained) is all you need to enter. Divisions for adults, children and unusual pets. Trophies, Ribbons and prizes will be awarded.
