Habitat for Humanity pours foundation for House #22

The pandemic caused delays. So did February’s freezing weather. The skyrocketing cost of materials certainly didn’t help, and building supplies were hard to come by as well. But Wimberley’s Habitat for Humanity is back in action again with their 22nd house in this area. Locally Wimberley Valley Habitat for Humanity was formed in 1992. It is an affiliate of Habitat International, a non-profit, ecumenical, Christian housing organization.

The organization depends on donations and lots of volunteers to help build housing locally in partnership with families that are in need. This is even more necessary now as the price of building materials has increased significantly over the last year.

They have built twenty-one houses for families and number twenty-two has just had its foundation poured. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with families in need to build decent, affordable housing.

“We are starting construction of house #22 in Woodcreek North at 67 Acacia Dr. Under the direction of Habitat International, we will not conduct a ‘Big Build’ for this house. That means it’s up to us to handle all the construction. This year we will be working Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays,” said HFH Vice President Bill Tarwater.

The building of the house is accomplished with volunteer workers, whom without there would be no HBB house builds. The prospective homeowners are required to work building their own house, providing real ownership in it. The houses are sold to families at no profit and with no interest charge.

HFH is always in need of volunteers, but the numbers of volunteer workers on site at any one time might be limited.
