Grammy Award-winning Brave Combo coming to Wimberley Playhouse

It’s the grand finale of the Wimberley Players series, Five Saturdays of Cultural Sharing.

Brave Combo, the acclaimed band from Denton that has performed from Lincoln Center to Paris, will bring The World of World Music to the Wimberley Playhouse on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 2:00.

From an amazingly wide range of musical styles, Brave Combo has planned this concert specifically for the Players’ cultural series. Each of the theater’s Five Saturdays is intended not only as top entertainment, but also as insight into how and why the show is related to its heritage.

The Brave Combo concert picks up on that theme.

“It’s really interesting to know what happens to ethnic music over time, once it’s part of our national music scene,” said Carl Finch, who leads the group he founded 40 years ago.

The dance band has rocked many a venue, from private parties to huge arenas festivals.

But the foot-stomping, hour-long musical performance at the Wimberley Playhouse will be suitable for all ages. Expect to hear rollicking polkas, a specialty of Brave Combo, plus conjunto, salsa, zydeco, jazz and other genres popular across the country and especially in Texas. Don’t be surprised if you are invited to stand up and dance in place or in the aisles.

“This is such a great way to wrap up the series,” said Jill Clark, a member of the Players and a lead sponsor of the Brave Combo show.

Previous cultural events at the Playhouse have included plays, readings, music, dance and poetry by Glass Half Full Theatre, Teatro Vivo, and Spectrum Theatre, all of Austin, and Indigenous Cultures Institute of San Marcos.

Funding for Five Saturdays of Cultural Sharing is provided by a Cultural District grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts, matched by generous donations from individuals and organizations. Tickets are free, but reservations are required. “Later in the summer we’ll announce the date when reservations can be made,” said Simone Corprew, executive manager. “We’re very excited to have this awesome group on our stage.”
