Dori Bradford rocks out, gets a radio job (again)

If you are an early riser and listen to 94.1 FM KWVH’s Breakfast Taco, you know who is behind the broadcasting board and in control of things. She’s also known to play a Kiss song to get the goat of radio cohost John Brown.

The lighthearted ways of Dori carries over to her show “Boots and Flip Flops” on the air Friday 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and 12 to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Listening to her shows, her time spent as a professional deejay sparkles through. A North Texas girl, she graduated from Denison High School, got married too young and moved to South Texas. She got a start in radio in Bay City at the “one hundred watt pure country, hot country station.”

“I was hired as an office manager, but after a while my boss said, ‘we need to get you on the air and for six years I was Kelly Green. After my daughter’s whose name is Kelly.” Dori said. “Clear Channel wanted that station’s transmitting antenna.” So after six years, it was then back to North Texas to care for her mom and dad.

After dad’s death, her mother moved to Austin to be closer to her brother. Dori went to Texas State. She got a job in Kyle, with a construction company, which soon relocated to Wimberley.

Lately, she spent two and a half years as a volunteer at the station and has been working on putting Breakfast Taco on the air at 7 a.m., missing only a couple of days because of the flu.

These days, she picked up a new gig.

“I am employed as the Administrative Manager, daily in charge of overseeing the office, features, handling volunteers and possible new shows at the radio station. Then there’s the promotions and fundraising side of it.”

Dori thrives as the early bird on the morning show. It is hard to do it once a week, let alone Monday through Friday. As a host she puts you at ease almost instantly with her winning smile and soothing voice.

Her new duties include marketing duties, something she’s thrilled about.

“Getting into the marketing side is kind of cool. The new logos, t-shirt give always…I live two minutes from here, it’s unbelievable. This is the best time of my life. People are here because they want to be here.”

There are many volunteer opportunities in Wimberley and not just at the radio station. “Volunteers, you really care about something when you volunteer… we’re here not to be movie stars or radio stars. You’re doing it for the community.” For the volunteers at the station, there are 65 of them.

“I can’t wait to meet them all. That’s 65 new ideas on how we can improve the station and community.”

Personally, she has two grown children, her son who she followed to Texas State and her daughter who followed her to Wimberley with Dori’s two grandchildren. Her musical preferences include Classic-Rock and Country. When it comes to music, the most important part of the song is the lyrics. “I got to know the lyrics.”

Like many of us, she used to “dream of winning the lottery and I’ll go to (somewhere)? Now I’m in Wimberley and I’ll never leave, (I’ll just) sit back and enjoy my little piece of heaven… it’s a dream come true to work here and to be here (Wimberley).”

Listen to Dori and John Brown on Breakfast Taco, on 7 to 8 a.m. with a multitude of guest stars such as Constable Ray Helm on Thursday, and don’t forget to tune in on Wednesday to hear an update on what is in the upcoming Wimberley View.
