Dark Sky

A big but most important part of keeping any community beautiful is to protect that community’s nighttime darkness. Wimberley has been and is continuing to do just that. Local efforts include reducing light pollution and promoting the benefits of being designated as an International Dark Sky Community. In this regard, Wimberley, on June 11, 2018, was indeed the third such city in the Lone Star State to be so designated.

As an officially designated International Dark Sky Community, Wimberley can publicize in our promotional and tourism materials that visitors can come to this beautiful part of the Texas Hill Country and truly enjoy our gorgeous, starry nights. Climbing Mt. Baldy and going up to the Veterans Memorial at the EmilyAnn Theatre and Gardens are only two such places where these special viewing spots are available. Of course, our hilltops and open spaces in many other open spots also offer choice viewing areas.

Wimberley residents are proud of the dark sky designation and the efforts of the Wimberley Valley Dark Sky Committee to continue to promote its benefits. It allows us to host night viewing sky parties, encourage and help local businesses reduce light pollution and promote Wimberley’s dark sky to attract astro-tourists who travel with the goal of finding locations where it is still dark at night so they can view the night sky.

Truly, when we sing “The stars at night, are big and bright,” we mean it and we can prove it. Go outside and see for yourself and continue to tell others about our “Little Piece of Heaven.” Sincere thanks to all who have helped this endeavor to succeed in Keeping Wimberley Beautiful.
