Crisis Bread Basket’s good news but…

Living in the Wimberley Valley, you have been past the beautiful mural on the home of the Crisis Bread Basket many times. CBB feeds our hungry with the only requirement being a need while residing in the WISD area.

Managing food needs for families is quite a task. But there’s good news. Working with the Wimberley I.S.D., an agreement was reached about excess non-perishable inventory from the Back Pack program to be transferred to CBB.

Good things can come from bad situations. Worries about food supply sources during this quarantine, an agreement was reached with Ben. E Keith to be a source of supply. The quarantine has hit the restaurant business hard and it has also hurt food suppliers, like Ben E. Keith.

But looking into the near future, the outlook can be bleak. “We have seen a increase of about 10 to 20 percent…around 18 to 20 new families,” John Urban, Chairperson of the CBB said. “There’s a higher increase of individuals laid off, Barnabas (Connection) knows what’s happening and we are working closely with them,” on keeping tabs on the situation.

The food supply appears to be stabilizing and they are seeing some deliveries from the local HEB and Brookshire Brothers. For the present, they are in good shape.

“I’d like to remind everyone we are open and we want people to come in if they are in need, we’re there for them. Social distancing is being followed.... Our volunteers have made masks for them (if they don’t have one)… the food selections haven’t suffered in nutrition. The community has supported us with donations, we’re in good shape,” he said. “We have supplies of chicken, pork, turkey and ground beef … non-perishables pretty much comes and then goes out.” Vegetables and other perishables are donated by local gardeners and farmers, of which they are very thankful for.

But there is still one big worry about feeding the valley’s hungry. In the near future, those families being in quarantine will soon feel the impact of being without jobs and money coming in. “We don’t know about the future,” Urban said.
