Coach & Mentor

McDorman retires from WISD after more than two decades as teacher

Born a West Texas boy in Abilene, Jeff McDorman graduated junior and high school from Winters Texas. Texas Tech was his choice of college where he majored in Physical Education, Education and Biology.

As a coach in Texas, usually coaches start out at a small high school. As a small school coach, you are expected to coach just about every sport, which is what McDorman did at his first stop, Meridian, Texas. Football, basketball, golf, baseball and teaching five classes were his duties. All that work made for a busy time, but sometimes speeding through life has its advantages.

“I met my wife Susan in defensive driving class,” he said with a chuckle. Together for 31 years they have three sons. Two are coaching in the education field, and the third is “a contributing member of society and not on my payroll,” said McDorman pleased that all his sons are on their own.

The family moved to Glenn Rose for 11 years, where he coached and taught science classes, such as Integrated Physics, Chemistry, and Health.

“In my early years, I was (WHS Principal) Jason Valentine’s mentor teacher.”

McDorman’s wife meanwhile obtained her Administrative Certification and moved to Springtown.

He was the head basketball coach and taught for four years before finally arriving in Wimberley. His wife is also in WISD, and is an elementary assistant principal, serving at Bowen, Scudder and JWE.

McDorman’s coaching records are something to be marveled at. In Wimberley the past 12 years.

Boys Basketball

• All 10 seasons qualified for Boys State Basketball Playoffs.

• 4 District Championships from 2014-15 through 2017-18 seasons (overall record during that span 85-40; overall district record 37-5.

• 6 seasons with 20+ wins.

Girls Golf

Twelve years as Head Coach

• 6 - District Titles

• 9 - Regional Tournaments

•2- State Tournaments (first girls teams in the history of WHS to qualify for state)

• 2014-15 (5th place at State) 2015-16 (3rd place at State)

Boys Golf

10 years as Head Coach

• 6 - District Titles

• 8 - Regional Tournaments

These are pretty impressive records, ones that should stand for some time. But being on the football coaching staff that won the State Football title is hard to beat.

“All of the experiences of that, Jerry’s World (Cowboy’s Stadium) and then winning as champs, not a whole lot of coaches get to do that.” McDorman said.

“I’m blessed and thankful for being at WHS, the camaraderie and the brotherhood with the coaches and being a part of the Wimberley education system. It was a blessing moving here 12 years ago.”

As for teaching, “my favorite part of teaching is the rapport I had with kids and to watching them mature from being a freshman to a senior, the bonds you make and the interactions with the students.” And then there’s the worst part.

“The long hours either coaching or teaching, not seeing your wife, missing out on that. But that’s just part of the job.”

As for the future, McDorman rattled off a half dozen opportunities that are available that he is excited about. But his main objective for retirement is a familiar one.

“My number one priority is to visit my granddaughter as much ad I can. I can also see my boys coach their teams and be a proud parent of a coach.”
