City of Wimberley hosts Central Texas Chapter of Women Leading Government

Resiliency and inspiration marked the 2021 annual chapter meeting of Central Texas Women Leading Government (WLG-CTX) Tuesday, Nov. 10 at the Wimberley Community Center. More than 30 women representing San Marcos, Hutto, Pflugerville, Lake Travis and other municipalities joined with Wimberley Mayor Gina Fulkerson to fortify their commitment to service.

Wimberley City Secretary Laura Calcote, Treasurer of WLG-CTX, organized the meeting, “Turning Struggles into Strengths” featuring keynote speaker Stephanie Reyes, San Marcos Assistant City Manager. Reyes, a cancer survivor, shared the importance of other women in her fight to beat the disease, and the impact it had on her approach to serving her community.

“It’s really important to have a safe place as decision makers with all the things and all the challenges that we have to manage on a day-to-day basis. It is necessary to have a safe place to talk to somebody and to share your concerns—someone who is going to support you and also hold you accountable,” said Reyes.

The chapter voted in the new officers for 2022 during the meeting. They include Ashley Wayman, president, City of Rollingwood; Mayra Cantu, vice president, City of Georgetown; Irma Duran de Rodriguez, secretary, City of San Marcos; and Laura Calcote, treasurer, City of Wimberley.

Along with the City of Wimberley, sponsors for the evening were AMERESCO, Gessner Engineering, KSA and Performance Services.

“We are very grateful for our meeting sponsors whose support enhances the festivities and camaraderie that make this a fun evening for our hard-working women leaders. It’s always great to send our attendees home with door prizes,” said Calcote.

WLG helps women succeed in public service by enhancing career-building models that develop leadership skills and by networking professional women in government.
