BYE-WEEK REVIEW

Texans improving over last season

A year ago, the Wimberley Texans were 1-5 heading into district play. Though they would make the playoffs, Wimberley finished the season at 4-7 with a Bi-District loss to the Crystal City Javelinas. Needless to say, the team has come in with a chip on their shoulder.

Wimberley finished non-district play with a 5-1 record with their lone loss coming against Austin Regents Knights, who are currently ranked 4th in the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Private School rankings.

What has been the major improvement from last year’s team?

For starters, the offense has taken major steps forward. Last year during non-district, the Texans averaged 18 points per game. Through five games from this year, Wimberley increased their offensive production by double averaging 36 points per game.

After giving up an average of 43 points per game during non-district, the defense has step up their game as well and have held opposing offenses to just 21 points per game. Not only that, but the defense has forced at least one turnover or safety in four games out of the five.

Both sides of the ball have continued to improve during non-district play as district approaches. With their bye week giving the Texans a chance to heal their bumps and bruises, the “real season” begins.

District 13 again proves to be another tough outing for the Texans. Including Wimberley, the district features four teams with combined 18-2 record. In order for the Texans to win their first district championship since 2017, they must perform at their best every week.

Wimberley travels to Austin this Thursday to kickoff district play against the Austin Eastside Memorial Panthers.
