Big Scoop for Good Sam

Last Saturday, July 7, Good Sam held its annual Big Scoop Ice Cream Festival, celebrating summer and at the same time helping Good Sam to raise funds for its summer camp program. It was perfect weather with the temperature in the 90’s, making the ice cream that more enjoyable.

Starting at 1 p.m. and running until 7 p.m., it was a whole day of activities not just one scoop and lickety-split it’s over. No sir, It was a time to savor the frozen dessert (your choice of flavors), maybe make a cardboard cone head, play games like pin the cherry on the ice cream cone or the always popular, bean bag toss.

The staff was dressed in soda jerk shirts and hats and added certain flair to the event. Entertainment was all afternoon long with the Wimberley Drums, Dance Elite, cloggers, singers and just a great time all around.

There were local sponsors for each of the ice cream treats such as Banana Splits, Hot Fudge Sundae, Sprinkles and Whipped Cream, and just Sprinkles. They also had donations to raffle off. It was a wonderful way to spend a Saturday afternoon and best of all it was all for a good cause.

Camp Good Sam tries to break the cycle of at-risk youth in Wimberley, by providing learning during the summer, a time where low-income children can lose two to three months in reading and math skills.

Middle class students can actually make gains during summer months due to access to libraries, and museums. Vacations with parents can also enlighten students with different cultures, geography and events that are unique and different than their normal dayto- day activities.

But with those less fortunate parents working eight hours or more just to keep food on the table, children are left to their devices. This can mean often there is no food for lunch or snacks. That is where Camp Good Sam comes in. Its camp fills in with food, snacks and learning during the summer months.

“The Big Scoop brings the community together to help support the Good Sam program. So really it’s a big gift to itself,” Judy Holmes, the Chairwoman of the event said.
