Wimberley Valley Big Band says ‘Goodbye’ to summer
The Wimberley Valley Big Band prepares to say “goodbye” to summer with a free concert on Saturday, October 1, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. This outdoor concert will be staged in the “backyard” behind the former Cypress Creek Café off of Ranch Road 12 in the Wimberley Square. Guests are encouraged to make good use of the concrete dance floor in front of the stage, as great dance tunes are among the best of the band’s lively playlist. Self-described as “The jazziest small town big band,” their musical interests range from light jazz and big band swing standards to pop and vocal favorites.

Woodcreek hosting Arbor Day, National Night Out celebrations
The face of Woodcreek has changed considerably since the 696 acres were incorporated in 1984. Climate change, drought and more recently, the threat of fire have all challenged citizens and community leaders in protecting our community resources. Sadly, many of the beautiful oak trees that lined the city streets and neighborhoods died, ravaged by oak wilt disease. The city needs new ideas, methods and community involvement to conserve the natural health.

Estivation
In many parts of the world with hot dry summers, the plants and animals enter a state of estivation, which is a type of summer hibernation. This past summe when the weather in Wimberley was extremely hot and dry many of our plants (that didn’t die) went into estivation. When at last our rains came we witnessed a return of plant growth and in many cases, flowering. The purple Cenizo, rain lilies, mealy blue sage and lantana are all common native plants that recently resumed blooming.

Hill Country Community Band perform selections from across the pond
On Sunday, October 2, at 4 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Wimberley, the Hill Country Community Band will perform their special, free concert program called, “Hail Britannia: A Tribute to Queen Elizabeth II”. From the initial board meeting to the last practice, The program content has been months in the making and originally was a musical nod from director, Dr. Manuel Arambula, to his personal selection of past English composers. However, recent historical events in the United Kingdom caused a subtle shift of the concert’s tone, but the planned playlist has remained unchanged. That varied list includes sea shanties, lively marches, some maybe unfamiliar compositions, and several well known melodies.

Texans bag the Badgers
There might not be anything more satisfying in high school football than spoiling an opponent’s homecoming game. Given Wimberley’s well-earned reputation as a good football program, most teams don’t give the Texans the chance to take over homecoming, but the Lampasas Badgers felt they were up for the challenge.
