Honoring the fallen
Last week marked a solemn moment as police officers, family, friends and guests filled the rotunda of the Hays County Government Center for the annual Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Ceremony on May 10. The Texas Fraternal Order of Police, Hill Country Lodge #23 hosted the memorial cer emony during National Police Week, which is observed from May 9-15.

Quarry air permit approved, TESPA files suit
The Texas Commission of Environmental Quality approved the air quality permit requested by Far South Mining to establish a rock quarry at Needmore Ranch. Almost as soon as the permit was approved, a notice was filed by the Trinity Edwards Springs Protection Agency with an intent to sue the mining company in an attempt to stop the development of a quarry.

Here’s a little side note on the Wimberley Ace Hardware anniversary story. Back when the North Hays County EMS was first formed we had no place to keep our single ambulance. John and Gay Kingrey , both EMT’s in the newly formed service, graciously allowed us to use a section of the Discount parking lot for park ing the ambulance (and first responder vehicles during EMS runs). The Discount was the central rallying point for the ambulance crew until we eventually moved into the old fire station on Emergency Lane.

Native Wildflowers for the landscape
At the Emily Ann Butterfly Festival in April I set up a display of currently blooming native flowers. I was at the Hays County Master Naturalist booth. My first thought when I was asked to put on my display this year (I have done it many times in past years) was, “Oh no, with the drought I don’t have many native plants blooming.”

Early runoff voting ends Friday
Early voting in the May 24 primary runoff elections ends Friday, May 20. Under state law, voters who cast ballots in either party’s primary election must vote only in the same party’s runoff election. Voters who did not cast ballots in the primary may vote in either party’s runoff election.
