Wimberley ISD Board of Trustee Election

Joe Malone

What do you want to accomplish if elected?

Malone: I hope to continue the work of the current WISD Board of Trustees and our administrative team in implementing a budget, hiring and retaining staff, and approving policy that improve outcomes for all our students, fosters a culture of kindness and respect on all our campuses, create life-long learners, and empowers our WISD students to make a positive impact in their community.

What are the biggest changes you think WISD will face in the coming years and how would you address them?

Malone: WISD faces many challenges in the area of student mental health and safety, bridging gaps in student achievement, and being able to meet the needs of a diverse student population. As we face these challenges, we are required to do so with a limited budget and in compliance with TEA mandates, like the STAAR exam. This complex dynamic represents WISD’s biggest challenge.

What are areas of education that you would like to see implemented or emphasized within the school district for our students?

Malone: In deciding what areas of education to emphasize in our school district, I would look to the current WISD Board Goals and continue the work of the Board and our administrative team in the following areas: (1) reduce the achievement gap for low socioeconomic and ELL students; (2) ensure opportunities for technical writing, research papers, and development of advanced writing skills at the high school level in core subject areas; and, (3) make strategic investments to improve science outcomes at all grade levels, including providing increased opportunities and rewards for “hands-on” science learning.

How do you plan to support Wimberley’s teacher and WISD staff?

Malone: I would plan to support WISD teachers and staff by working with our administrative team to review our compensation models to ensure we are competitive with surrounding districts so we can continue to hire and retain the best and brightest teachers in the state, offer additional training and professional development that will allow our teachers to learn and implement new strategies, and develop more leadership and mentoring opportunities for our teachers and staff.
