Young team learns to play on the field

After a six game weekend tournament, the Lady Texan soccer team is now 4-2-1 on the season.

Following a season opening win over Pleasanton, Wimberley then went to a tournament hosted by Pleasanton over the weekend.

On Thursday, Wimberley beat La Vernia 5-1 and Manor New Tech 4-0. On Friday, Wimberley lost 4-2 to Medina Valley and 6-0 to Gregory Portland. On Saturday, Wimberley tied Pleasanton 1-1 before beating La Vernia 9-0.

As with any season, senior leadership is important, and that sets Wimberley up to have the potential for a great year.

“Holly Harwood is back for her last year,” Head Coach Brinton Nute said. “Her workrate and her enthusiasm are really impressive. She is committed to play soccer for Angelo State University and is our leader.”

There were plenty of noteworthy performances from the weekend, but sophomore Emily Thames may have had the most impressive. On Thursday, she scored three goals against La Vernia. On Friday, she helped lead Wimberley to a victory over Bandera as one of the leading scorers on the basketball court. Then on Saturday she returned to the soccer field where she scored five goals, once again, against La Vernia.

“Emily Thames is a sophomore starter for the basketball team and excellent track athlete,” Nute said. “…She is also a really good soccer player.”

Wimberley also has three freshmen starting on the team.

“Playing six games this weekend really helped,” Nute said. “We took a lot of positive from it. We are a relatively young team with freshmen Izzy Franchione, Selah Jones and Sidney Hendon starting in every game. They picked up valuable experience against teams like Gregory Portland, where 80 percent of their players are seniors.”

Wimberley played Seguin on Tuesday night after the Wimberley View’s time of press. This week they will head to a tournament on Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Fredericksburg.
