Wimberley wins, position now set for playoffs

The Wimberley girls’ soccer team played Canyon Lake last Friday in their traditional Battle of the Backbone. With a strategy of “packing the box”, Canyon Lake tried to slow down the powerful attack of the Texans. The strategy worked for the first half as the score stood 0-0 after one half. But the smaller and less experienced Canyon Lake girls couldn’t hold back the flood of goals in the second half and the Texans won 4-0.

On the other hand, the Texans girls kept their winning record rolling and spent most of the first half attacking in Canyon Lake’s half. By packing the box with defenders, Canyon Lake strategy worked defense zone with defenders so the Texans couldn’t score and the strategy worked as the first half ended at 0-0. Fortunately, the Texans had little to worry about as their powerful offense notched four goals in the second half.

Going into the game against Canyon Lake last Friday, Wimberley girls’ coach Nute had said, “We felt fit and healthy except for a few niggling aches and pains. That’s about par for the course at this stage of the season.”

The win over Canyon Lake upped the Texans’ district record to 19 wins 2 losses and 1 tie plus second place for upcoming district play. Now the Texans must wait over the Spring break before learning which team they will play first in Bi-District competition. That likely first opponent in bi-district play will be Burnet whose season record stands at 8-13.

Against Boerne the previous week, the halftime score stood 1-1. Then Boerne broke out for five goals in the second half and won 6-2. When asked what his team had expected out of the Boerne game, Coach Nute answered, “We expected what we got. But, as I say after any win or a loss, ‘It’s on to the next game’. This is not a time to dwell on the past.”

The first Texan goal against Boerne came as Holly Harwood broke away from midfield, dribbled into the Boerne zone then smashed the ball into the net from outside the box. The Texans’ second goal came as Anna Olmedo dribbled down the field from inside the Texan half of the field and scored.

Asked which Texan players have improved greatly since the beginning of the season, Coach Nute listed Cassidy Heinemann. “She had a good performance in the Boerne game. She’s been working on using her left foot and the improvement shows.” The coach also praised Jerzi Deatherage with “Her work rate near the goal has improved tremendously.”
