Wimberley tops Cedar Creek

The Wimberley Lady Texan soccer team got back on track this week with a 3-0 victory over Bastrop Cedar Creek.

“It was one of our most accomplished performances of the year,” Head Coach Brinton Nute said. “They were a pretty good team, but we had a lot more possessions. I don’t think they had a shot on target against us. Considering we came off a difficult schedule, it was a great game for us.”

Wimberley went up 2-0 at halftime with early goals from Laysa Molina and Jerzi Deatherage. Holly Harwood, who leads the team in goals scored, added another one in the second half.

“Holly is very good technically, but her work rate is second to none,” Nute said. “She is constantly defending, attacking. She is all over the field, and she covers a lot of ground in games. She lifts the energy level when she is on the field.”

The game on Friday against Bellville was rescheduled for March 7.

Last week, Wimberley fell to Gregory Portland, a 5A high school in Corpus Christi, in the team’s only game last week.

Wimberley went up 1-0 with an early goal from Harwood.

“She scored from about 25 yards out,” Head Coach Brinton Nute said. “It was a good strike. We scored within the first 10 minutes or so. You could see that Gregory Portland was in a bit of shock, because they aren’t used to playing small schools and being behind.”

Gregory Portland scored the next three goals of the game to take the victory over Wimberley.

“Overall, it was a good performance,” Nute said. “They were very physical, and their abilities eventually showed through. But playing a good 5A team, we will get more out of that game than playing a 4A team. Our record reflects poorly on us, but we are learning and we are going to be a better team because of it. Our four losses are against really good programs.”

Wimberley now has a 4-4-2 record on the season.

Wimberley played Burnet on Tuesday night after the Wimberley View’s time of press. On Friday, the team will travel to Pleasanton.

“It will be a very well matched game,” Nute said. “Last year, we played them four times and beat them all four times. But, three of those games were won on a PK shoot out, so it was very close.”

The junior varsity will start at 5 p.m. with the varsity starting at 7 p.m.
