Wimberley Texans seek redemption, nine seniors looking for playoff victories

After a disappointing first-round exit last year against the Taylor Ducks, the Wimberley Texan Basketball team looks to higher goals for the 2020-2021 season.

They will be filled with experience as nine seniors populate the roster hoping to make their final season a memorable one despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Similar to the Lady Texans district, Wimberley’s road back to redemption will be filled with roadblocks.

Returning Region IV Runner-Up Boerne will be the favorite to not only win the district but also to win the Region IV Title along with Fredericksburg who is currently the reigning district champion.

The TABC rankings currently have the Greyhounds ranked #6 while the Battlin Billies occupy the 10th spot.

Despite not being ranked with the top teams, the Texans have proved to themselves they can compete for a top seed for the playoffs last season, which included a close loss to Boerne at home.

The Texans will also face competition from the bottom half of the district in the forms of the Bandera Bulldogs and the rival Canyon Lake Hawks.

The Bulldogs will be the main threat to Wimberley, who returned many seniors this season and are reinvigorated under a new coaching staff. The Hawks, despite graduating many players, are also a team to look out for given the history between the rival schools.

Comal Davenport is the new team added to the district following Llano’s drop down into 3A. The new school in the Comal ISD School System will be competing for the first time under UIL competition.

The 2020-2021 season kicked off a home opener against the Burnet Bulldogs. The Texans lost the hard-fought battle against the Bulldogs losing 62-51.

But the Texans didn’t have to wait long for their first victory of the season as Wimberley knocked off Luling 75-50 for the first win of the season.

The win contributed to a three-game-winning streak by the Texans, which included a thrilling overtime win over Pleasanton.

But Wimberley soon fell to a four-game losing streak against tough competition in Liberty Hill, Boerne Champion, San Marcos Home School, and St. Michaels.

The losing streak was snapped against Hondo as the Texans bounced back to a 62-54 win over the Owls. The Hondo game also saw the return of many of the seniors who were busy playing football during the Texan’s long playoff run during football season.

After another tough loss to New Braunfels, Wimberley bounced back last Saturday with a 69-26 win over the Cuero Gobblers.

Leading the team in scoring was senior Cade Royal with 18 points followed by senior Jaxon Watts with 17. Royal also led the team on the boards with seven rebounds along with seniors Zane Sutton Edwards and Ty Pruett with five apiece.

The Texans will play one final game before the Christmas Break Monday afternoon against Hays Johnson before returning to play December 29th at home against Eagle Pass.
