Wimberley Texan soccer finding footing as season progresses

The Wimberley Texan soccer team lost this week 2-0 to Lampasas.

“Defensively we did OK,” Head Coach Ramez Antoun said. “We made a few mistakes they capitalized on. On offense we had a few chances we just couldn’t capitalize on.”

The team is 4-6-1 on the season.

This year’s Texan soccer team is almost completely new as 13 of 18 varsity players graduated last year.

“We have five varsity players from last year, and moved up most of the junior varsity,” Antoun said. “We are trying to get a bunch of sophomores and a few freshmen up to speed, and it is taking a little while, which is to be expected.”

Among the graduating seniors from last season were the top two goal scorers, Alan Hernandez and Jack Cole, along with All State Goal Keeper Brendon Schott.

This year, senior Grant Cole has kept his place as a team captain along with Edgar Jimenez.

“Both are three year lettermen,” Antoun said. “They are hard nose players. They play hard and are flexible on the field. They are very open minded and very encouraging to their teammates. They have that desire to win and put their bodies on the line to get it done.”

Sophomore Connor Collier was also named a team captain.

“He is one of the young guys stepping up,” Antoun said. “He has impressed me with his work ethic and coachability. He is vocal and leads the group.”

On Tuesday, the Texans faced Pleasanton. On Friday, La Vernia will come to Wimberley to play at 6 p.m. Wimberley previously faced La Vernia this season losing 4-3 in a shoot out.
