A mass of Texan players wait on the sideline for their chance to play in the homecoming game last Friday night. Wimberley head coach suited up varsity and junior varsity players in expectation of an overpowering victory.

Wimberley pounds Eastside Memorial

For Austin Eastside Memorial’s football team, the season got worse last Friday night as the Wimberley Texans dealt them a humiliating 76-0 defeat. When the score reached 28-0 for the home team after just one quarter, Wimberley’s homecoming crowd could pretty much predict the winner. As the halftime score reached 55-0, Wimberley coach Doug Warren started using varsity subs and junior varsity players to limit the rout.

“Their kids played hard but they struggled with only 22 players,” Texan coach Warren explained. “Of course we wanted our team to play well on the field, but we can’t just run up the score.” The coach explained that UIL, the governing athletics agency for Texas high schools, creates schedules by school population sizes, not relative sports records over years, which may skew actual competition equality.

Memorial does not field a JV team so by dressing his junior varsity for the Austin Memorial game, the coach gave more Texan players varsity game time while avoiding crucial injuries to his varsity. And, it worked, as the Texans sustained only minor bumps and bruises against Eastside.

According to their coach, varsity guards Carson Minnix and Ryan Rubio played well against Memorial as did center Cameron Coburn. Tackles Zach Starr and Colin Kincaid also received praise from their coach for their offensive line play. On defense, Ben Jacobson, Blake Lebkuecher (both defensive ends) and linebacker Ahron Arroyo spent the night bottling up the Memorial ground game.

Next Friday, Wimberley continues district play when the Texans travel to Bandera which has suffered a three-game losing streak. Last week, Cuerro pounded Bandera 64-7 which dropped their record to 1-4-1.

“Traditionally, Bandera has been a tough place to play, and we’re on the road which is always a risk. In fact, the rest of the way, we can’t take any team lightly. We’re in district play now with only four of the six teams advancing to district competition.”
